Michael Craig-Martin's work examines the relationship between recognizable objects and their representation. Untitled (umbrella) and Untitled (headphones) are painted with acrylic on aluminum panels. The otherwise mundane objects are depicted in amplified neons, elevating the images to an iconic "pop" status. Craig-Martin first draws the object silhouettes digitally, then uses paint rollers and thin tape to achieve his crisp delineated lines on the aluminum surface. The artist uses unexpected, incongruous colors when depicting these objects, influenced both by Josef Albers's color theory and his own interest in subverting one's typical conception and understanding of the objects at hand.
