Tony Cragg’s sculpture tests the limits of traditional materials including bronze, glass, wood, and stone, by twisting them into sublime, undulating forms that evoke elements of the natural environment. Companions, is made entirely of fiberglass and evokes gourd or carpel and stamen extrusions spreading out in all directions from planar surfaces and cones. Light in weight as well as color yet formidable in size, Companions is at once unified and voluminous, solid and composed of parts. It represents a continuation of Tony Cragg’s interest in collaging related, familiar forms into abstract sculptural compositions. The interplay between positive and negative space is a key concern in his works, and this can be seen in the way Companions engages the surrounding space—especially the vertical space above it.
