Ah, pajamas.

What started on college campuses as languid weekend togs commuted onto runways a few years ago and now resonates in places as disparate as Tokyo and Copenhagen.

Given its ultimate comfort, trend watchers expect the relaxed PJ look will only accelerate in 2017. It influences sportswear, dresses, shoes and even coats.

While the fit is gloriously easy, current pajama fashions emphasize panache –  not slouchiness. Think of the polished loungewear and dressing gowns of the Twenties and Thirties as models for the style.

Vivid, mixed prints or slightly leaner silhouettes can transform the classic pajama set into a chic look for a night out.

Free People

Make a statement with a matching ensemble such as Free People’s piped silk jacket and cropped pants in mixed garden prints or J.Crew’s silk foulard shirt and drawstring pants.

Or just give the look a test drive in a wide-leg cropped pant such as ZARA's multicolor floral-print pants. It’s also easy to pick up a pajama top to wear over shorts or jeans.

Silk satin dresses cut on the bias hug the body like classic lingerie, but todays are less sexpot than the inner wear as outerwear style popular in the Nineties. Ditto and tap pants with playful tops.

Striped and plaid fabrics reminiscent of pajamas turn up in playful dresses. Nordstrom stocks a lovely bias-cut striped midi dress by Lafayette 148 as well as a playful black and white silk plaid slipdress under its own brand.

Neiman Marcus

Give your feet the comfort treatment with slipper-like flat slides dolled up with fur and feather trims.

And come fall, look for cuddly bathrobe jackets and coats in luxurious fabrics like velvet and fake fur.

It’s never been easier to be chic.
